WHAT ARE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS?
Community schools provide a nurturing environment where students receive academic education in addition to support services such as tutoring, counseling, healthcare, and extracurricular activities. Families, schools, community members and local organizations come together to ensure the long-term well-being and success of every student. This fosters a sense of belonging and support that extends far beyond the classroom.
Community schools integrate four main pillars:
- Integrated Student Supports: Community schools provide academic, emotional, and healthcare assistance to students as needed.
- Expanded and Enriched Learning Time: Beyond regular classes, students have more opportunities for arts, sports, and cultural activities both during and after school.
- Active Family and Community Engagement: Families and community members are encouraged to participate in school activities and decision-making, and will have access to more community programs and leadership training.
- Collaborative Leadership: The New Haven Community Schools Partnership delivers a continuum of coordinated support services tailored to academic, social, emotional, and health needs.
Beginning in August 2024, we will implement these initiatives at Fair Haven School, expanding to FAME in August 2025. Each school will have a full-time Community School Coordinator and Family Support Care Coordinator to facilitate communication and access to programs.
